 Lacuna (Marcozzi Contemporary Theater)

F. Cossiga

ENGLISH
A Performance inspired by "La strage di Bologna" the "Bologna massacre", a terrorist bombing of the Central Station at Bologna, Italy, on the morning of 2 August 1980, which killed 85 people and wounded more than 200.

The neo-fascist terrorist organization Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari (Armed Revolutionary Nuclei), have been accused for the attack; they always denied any involvement; other theories have been proposed, especially in correlation with the strategy of tension.

Excerpt for the interview with Francesco Cossiga, Italian president of Republic, prime minister from 1974 till 1992 and life senator and the journalist Milena Gabanneli, tv program “Report” at RAI3 - Radio Televisione Italiana.

Cossiga: The secret services are either secret or just services.
Journalist: But often they have acted in an illicit manner.
C: Always! The secret service exists to act in an illicit way, in a legal way....I mean according with their constitutional legitimacy but in an illegal way otherwise they would have no reason to exist. In case a Nation retains to need the secret services, the Nation itself knows that they will act illegally.
J: Tell us a secret that you have never told anybody
C: The secrets that I keep, I know (not clear in the interview), but partially I have forgotten..
J: So it seems that the best way to maintain a secret is to forget it...
C: Yes, exactly, I have forgotten almost everything.
C: The fact that every year the inhabitants of Bologna and other people insult me in the squares of Bologna is a ritual - asking for the secret - and I believe that it's right that they do it.

Since 1980 the Italian Government still keep the state secret on this event - all the documents and as well as the real cause and facts are still unknow  to avoid the intervention of the magistrature.

Where does the state keep those information?
On an encrypted pc?
In a strongroom?
In the body of a person?

The word Lacuna in Italian means "lack of" as Francsco Cossiga admitted the best way to keep a secret is to forget it.
With clear fanta-politcal and fanta-scientifcal elements, this Performance revolves around the fact that as an ordinary thought needs a body to inhabit in order to exist, secret information needs to be erased from the body that it inhabits, in order to be maintained.

When a memory is deleted, the fact disappears.

The performance explores the unconfortable role of the secret intelligence service in this terror attack to promote the strategy of tension, a theory that Western governments used tactics that aimed to divide, manipulate, and control public opinion using fear, propaganda, disinformation, psychological warfare, agents provocateurs in order to achieve their strategic aims.
